Uwe Scholz is one of the most brilliant choreographic minds of his generation - he died in November 2004 at the age of 45. The Great Mass is one of the most impressive works of this important neoclassical Choreographer - a truly impressive requiem; a choreographic revelation. The full length Choreography takes its name from Mozart's famous unfinished Mass in C minor and adds other works by the same composer, such as the Adagio and Fugue in C minor and the motet Ave verum corpus as well as passages of Gregorian chant, and sequences from contemporary music by Gyorgy Kurtag, Thomas Jahn and Arvo Part. The Leipzig Ballet is regarded as one of the best ballet companies worldwide.
Any reservations one might have about the work are rather pointless. Very beautiful ballets tosacred music which gladden and assuage have been made before, notably John Neumeier's Magnificat, but Scholz's Grand Messe portrays man as a pawn in the hands of man, as well as being an instrument of the divine. It is not only a feast for the eyes. I can think of no other classical choreographer today who possesses the richness of vocabulary, the intense musicality, plus the limitless imagination to create a work of such scope.Culturekiosque
