Let Judith Weir, Master of the Queen’s Music, introduce this album: “Ed Hughes' refreshing, cultured, lovingly patterned music is built around a thoroughly contemporary theme; our present-day contemplation. Our perceptions constantly change and re-energise as we encounter familiar objects while colours, shadings and vegetation are in a constant flow of development. The same can be certainly said of all the works in this rich collection, which surge forward with textural warmth and harmonic continuity.”
Ed Hughes is a master of composition to the highest degree; his works have been premiered and performed around the world and include operas, music for silent films, chamber, orchestral and piano works – and those are just the works on his recordings for Métier. He has received commissions from London Sinfonietta, The Opera Group, Brighton Festival, Glyndebourne and major ensembles. He won the British Composer Award for his Chaconne for Jonathan Harvey.
Inspired by the South Downs, a range of chalk hills extending about 260 square miles across the South East of England; but however local the inspiration, Hughes’s work has universal appeal.
