William Bolcom (b. 1938)

Music for Two Pianos

William Bolcom was born in Seattle, Washington. Hestudied composition with Milhaud at Mills College inOakland, California from 1958 to 1961, continuing withhim and Messiaen in Paris. While teaching at QueensCollege in New York City in the late 1960s, hedeveloped an interest in ragtime piano performance thathelped spur a renewed interest in the music, leading tothe composition of rags such as Graceful Ghost. Since1973 he has taught at the University of Michigan.

Bolcom is best known for his many recitals andrecordings of historical American popular song with hiswife, mezzo-soprano Joan Morris. His earlycompositions are serial, reflecting Boulez, Stockhausenand Berio. With his discovery of ragtime, he found hismature style that melds popular and classical idioms in adistinctively American eclecticism.

Perusing a collection of late nineteenth-centuryLatin American dances inspired Recuerdos(Reminiscences). Bolcom saw the continuity betweenAmerican ragtime and the larger world tradition of lightpiano music, writing his own tribute and evocations ofthat era. Ch??ro, the genre of Brazilian street folk-song,is in the style of Ernesto Nazareth, its creator. Paseoreflects the melding of Latin and North Americanmusics in Civil War-era New Orleans in the music ofAmerica's first classical virtuoso pianist Louis MoreauGottschalk. Valse Venezolano is a Venezuelan waltz inthe style of Ramon Delgado Palacios. It makes use ofmany of the stylistic elements of Palacios, includingunexpected leaps, modulations and phrase lengths aswell as excursions into 5/8 metre. Recuerdos waswritten for and first given at the Murray Dranoff Two-Piano Competition in 1991.

Frescoes is one of Bolcom's most powerful worksin its scope and colours. In the detailed preface, Bolcom, inspired by the brief sketching, rapid painting and grandvision of fresco technique, wrote Frescoes in similarstyle. The pianists also double on harpsichord andharmonium. The score itself, typical of many works ofthe late 1960s and early 1970s, is visual \eye music"incorporating aleatoric improvisation, unsynchronizedplaying, tone clusters and plucking of the strings. Thework is in two movements, War in Heaven and TheCaves of Orcus. It was first performed in 1971 inToronto by Bruce Mather and Pierriette LePage.

The Sonata for Two Pianos in One Movementdisplays the focus resulting from the condensation of athree-movement form into a single movement. The firstmovement Gaia, the earth mother creatrix and sustainerof life on Earth, explores a nearly orchestral range ofcolours through a sonata-form structure of themes inwhich a lyrical third theme, in Bolcom's words, "set(s)up a conflict that proves to be irresoluble except bycontinuing into the other two movements". NightDiversion uses two pedal tones from Gaia which leadsto a third (B flat); this note brackets two quotations, thefirst from Schoenberg's Harmonielehre and the secondthe first ten notes from Debussy's Brouillards. AncientDances grew from an early Bolcom fragment. Theconflicts of the previous two movements return to beresolved in a clear D major with the lyrical third themeof the first movement in apotheosis to end the work.

Bolcom combines ancient Greek rhythms with adancing blues, creating unforeseen connections. TheSonata was commissioned for the Paratore brothers'piano duo who gave the premi?¿re in 1994.

Interlude dates from the early 1960s and thecomposer's "total chromatic period", which took placein Paris and at Stanford and includes the first dozenpiano etudes and works such as Decalage for cello andpiano.

Bolcom's suite The Garden of Eden, originally forsolo piano, uses the ragtime idiom to tell the biblicalstory of the Fall from Genesis. It consists of fourmovements, each a self-contained "rag". Bolcomarranged the third and fourth rags, The Serpent's Kissand Through Eden's Gates, for two pianos in 1994 fortheir premi?¿re recording by Richard and John Contigula.

The Serpent's Kiss uses various ragtime effects such asheel stomping and knocking on the wood of the piano inaddition to aptly appropriate tongue clicking. ThroughEden's Gates, in Bolcom's words, "conjures the imageof Adam and Eve calmly cakewalking their way out ofParadise".
