Beethoven lived at a time when music was looking for new means of expression, not least from the point of view of form. The classical confines were about to be sundered and new patterns were the subject of experiment. This is at times observable in the arrangement of the movements of a piece of music: a work such as the Sonata in E minor Op. 90 has only two movements instead of the traditional three or four. Beethoven claimed that the sonata was a musical description of Count Lichnowsky's romance. The introductory movement was to symbolise "the struggle between head and heart" while the second movement described "a conversation with the beloved."
