GRAN TEATRE DEL LICEU
Conducted by GIULIANO CARELLA
Stage Directed by NURIA ESPERT
Set Design by EZIO FRIGERIO

The story of the beautiful but cruel princess Turandot has a unique place among Puccini's works, displaying the composer's ability to reflect the musical trends of his time more convincingly than any of his other operas. Despite its wealth of inspired melodies (among them Calaf's aria "Nessun dorma" in the third act), even today the opera's chief fascination remains its imaginative tonality and subtle instrumentation. The title role is performed by Luana DeVol, who has been on the international opera scene for more than three decades and whose versatile, dramatic soprano perfectly suits the character of the despising, yet vulnerable Turandot. Lirico-spinto soprano Barbara Frittoli, one of the best-known Puccini/Verdi performers on the current scene, presents her lyrical vocal qualities in the role of the slave Liu. The director, Nuria Espert, retained the lavish settings and magnificent sets traditionally associated with the opera. None the less, Espert's approach to the work is founded on the doubts that Puccini himself expressed about the final scene of the work. In Espert's conception, Turandot remains incapable of turning into an ordinary, docile woman defeated by male strength, and so she stabs herself to death.

BONUS; Luana DeVol - Following the Dream / Directed by Stephen DeVol.

Image Puccini: Tosca
A superlative staging of Puccini's Tosca by Italian opera producer Hugo de Ana brought to you from the world-famous Arena di Verona and complete with all the splendour that a Puccini opera demands! The popular tragedy is sung by a dream team cast of excellent singer-actors - Fiorenza Cedolins, Marcelo Alvarez, Ruggero Raimondi - and conducted by long-established Arena di Verona conductor Daniel Oren. The recording captures one of those special Verona summer evenings, when the audience fills the historic circle in expectation of the enjoyment of an open-air opera performance. Verona's amphitheatre, known as the 'arena', provides an atmospheric setting for the summer festival that has assembled the stars of the international opera scene each year since 1913. To view an opera in the former amphitheatre, the second largest of its kind after the Colosseum in Rome, can truly be regarded as an impressive experience. The DVD, however, provides a closer look at the stage and the singers and brings this dramatic opera directly to the home viewer.

Lluís Pasqual's witty and clever production was recorded at the Rossini Opera Festival in Pesaro. Staged by the Teatro Comunale di Bologna
Orchestra and Chorus of the Teatro Lirico di Cagliari
Conductor Gérard Korsten
Stage Director Stefano Vizioli

Whoever does not yet know Gaetano Donizetti's Don Pasquale will learn to love it with this elegant and stylish production by Stefano Vizioli. Lovers of this opera will be enthralled by Eva Mei's high, clear voice as well as Alessandro Corbelli's and her touching performances. Gérard Korsten conducts the orchestra of the Teatro Lirico and proves that Donizetti's spritely music gives room for fascinating interpretations. The opera tells the story of an elderly dandy, who is thoroughly cured from his desire to get married and thus hands over his young lady to her actual lover - a tale as old as comedy itself. Donizetti however, being the master of cryptic comedy, extends this traditional "buffa" subject matter to a character comedy. His characters are not merely archetypes; they develop their individual profile throughout the differentiated and diversified plot. This work shines with musical wit, expressed in numerous coloraturas, cavatinas and duets.

Music of introverted tenderness and a libretto that hints at much and offers few answers - such is Pelléas et Mélisande, Claude Debussy´s only completed opera, based on the play of the same name by the Symbolist and Nobel Prize winner Maurice Maeterlinck.

Staged in Essen's Aalto Theatre, this pioneering work of early modern times was a landmark. "Conductor Stefan Soltesz knows how to highlight these sensualist Debussy colours, let melody blossom, enthral with the magic of sound. And when these seraphic tones ring out from a stage flooded with light, we cannot help but leave the world far behind", wrote the critics. The consummately precise staging by veteran stage director Nikolaus Lehnhoff has a cast to match these wondrous sounds. The characters seem to float through the scenes, bringing to the stage the unspeakable, the negation and extinction of their feelings, showing the people of this story in inescapable solitude. This production stars the young South African baritone Jacques Imbrailo as Pelléas and Michaela Selinger as Mélisande, as well as Vincent Le Texier and Doris Soffel.

Image Orpheus
The myth surrounding the Thracian king's son Orpheus has provided artistic inspiration for numerous composers, painters and directors over the centuries. As a rule, the plots tend to focus on Orpheus' grief following the death of his wife Eurydice and his attempts to retrieve her from the underworld. The choreographers Dominique Hervieu and José Montalvo, generally known for their work in purely musical contexts, instead place Orpheus at the centre of the story as an artist who charms gods and mortals alike with wit and song - even moving rocks to tears. Orpheus tells the story of Orpheus and Eurydice as a modern heroic epic: It's fast, exhilarating, and full of surprises. Nine dancers and seven singers and instrumentalists dance to the sound of bush drums in front of a lavishly-designed backdrop befitting a royal son. Classical singing merges with pop music. Hip-hop and break-dance meet orchestral music. Hervieu's and Montalvo's Orpheus is a captivating work that fans of modern dance theatre will simply adore.

Image Tchaikovsky: Magifique
"A few ballets, The Nutcracker, Sleeping Beauty, and Swan Lake, which at the end of the 19th Century brought together to the stage the composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky and two ballet masters of the imperial theatre, Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov, were conceived from three orchestral suites, which had become musical standards. Among these symphonic suites, The Nutcracker alone was written by the composer and performed under his direction before the creation of the completed ballet. It was on the occasion of a gala evening, so Tchaikovsky chose the"featured dances", namely dances reserved for"entertainments". Yet, even if he had considered using them, the orchestral suites of The Sleeping Beauty and Swan Lake were included without his approval after his death. Destined to be performed in concerts, they were considered a sort of best off of each of the ballets; bringing together without an event-driven chronology, the "featured dances" and a few numbers centred on the characters and the action. In looking for a title, I remembered that as a child I defined my wonderments as "Magifi que". Magnifique without a"n" because hatred divides (the word for hatred in French sounds like the letter"n"), and that this invented word, a sort of short-circuited language, fits well with the intentions of this creation: to create magic or else recycle life's raw material through expressive and poetic forms. However, the title is also"Tchaikovsky's Suites", in order to be consistent i.e."avoir de la suite dansses idees". Thierry Malandain

"Malandain the 'Magifi que' ... one of his most beautiful creations." Les echos

"What remains is Malandain's thoughts about the magic of dance, a delicate piece of poetry whose cracks are gracefully expressed. A never-ending ovation acclaimed the excellent troupe, but also the spirit of the work which kept resounding for a long time ..." Generalanzeiger Bonn"

In Siegfried, the "Second Day" or third evening of the Ring Cycle, we meet the pivotal hero of the epic tale. The energetic drive from Die Walküre is pursued here while Siegfried finally recaptures the mighty ring from Fafner the Dragon and awakens Brünnhilde from her penal sleep on the great rock.

Lance Ryan, having interpreted this role on the greatest stages of the world including the Bayreuth Festival, portrays the naïve hero. His antagonists are Peter Bronder, great and agile as Mime, Terje Stensvold, an experienced Wanderer and Johannes Martin Kränzle, who continues his mean and deceitful depiction of Alberich. The leading ladies are Nina Stemme, once again unrivalled as Brünnhilde and Anna Larsson, moving as the God-mother Erda.

Image Pfitzner: Palestrina

Simone Young
Recorded live at the Nationaltheater, Munich, 10 & 14 July 2009

Requiring 38 soloists, chorus and large orchestra, Palestrina, Hans Pfitzner's (1869-1949) "most important work" (Süddeutsche Zeitung), is a challenging opera to stage. Written in a lush late-Romantic idiom, the masterpiece weaves a fictitious tale around Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina, one of the most important Renaissance composers and renovators of sacred music, who fears losing his creative powers and his role in society.

In Munich, the city in which it was given its world premiere in 1917, the Bavarian State Opera succeeded - director Christian Stückl, best known for his staging of the Oberammergau Passion Play and the Salzburg Festival's "Jedermann", transformed the monumental work into an optical pop art event.

Conductor Simone Young maintains a silky, organic orchestral texture, and expertly holds the reins of the many vocal and instrumental parts. Heading the many outstanding soloists are the imposing Christopher Ventris as Palestrina, Bayreuth regular Falk Struckmann and baritone Michael Volle.

Antonin Dvorak's next to last opera draws its substance from the underwater wonderland of little mermaids, Undines and Melusines: Rusalka, a water nymph, wishes to become human in order to be loved by the young prince. Image L'Incoronatione Di Poppea
The Coronation of Poppea was the debut production from critically acclaimed stage director Ole Anders Tandberg in the Norwegian Opera & Ballet, and he lets blood flow. TV directors Anja Stabell and Stein-Roger Bull reinforces the impact by letting blood's bright color compete against black and white images. Poppea like you've never seen it before!

At the centre of events is the power-crazed Poppea. She aspires to the top level of the hierarchy and seduces Emperor Nero. He is totally captivated by Poppea and does everything possible to marry her, even if it leads to murder. A classic drama unfolds, where the struggle for power and riches paints an unattractive portrait of humankind. In this respect not much has changed since the opera was written 365 years ago.

The performance portrays the decadence of the late Roman Empire - with obvious parallels to our own times. But it all comes together towards the end in one of the loveliest duets ever composed: \Pur Ti Miro". With a top level cast.

"Coronation of Poppea is opera at its best... voluptuous baroque music and bloody, powerful drama." NRK

Image Verdi: Falstaff
Damiano Michieletto is bursting with ideas when it comes to combining illusion and reality. (Tagesspiegel).

Ambrogio Maestri seems a tailor-made Falstaff. A giant of a man in real life, he is the ideal eponymous hero and the most sought after Falstaff singer of his time. His physique is just right for the part, as are his powerful voice, flair for drama and feeling for the Verdi style. (New York Times).

The characters of the comedy appear as shadows of the past and now the drama, increasingly a mixture of dream and reality, can commence.

This surprising and imaginative staging thought up by the Italian director Damiano Michieletto moves the action of Verdi's late, great masterpiece from a fictitious London to that special care home, the Casa Verdi, a place rich in memories of great days past and impressions of a real-time present.

Image Mozart:Don Giovanni
The first D minor chords thunder ominously from the orchestra pit, while on the stage, the entrance hall of an elegant hotel appears, symbolic of a place of non-committal encounters. Luxury seeps from every pore of the stairs, galleries and mysterious doors - the perfect place for Don Giovanni's exercises in seduction. Director Sven-Eric Bechtolf pulls off a brilliant coup with the high aesthetics of his intrigue, a masterful parody of the "everything is possible" of our time - flanked by an ensemble of exquisite vocal talents. Ildebrando D'Arcangelo, testosterone-charged Latin lover, amounts "with his splendid timbre and his stunningly virile magnetism to what must be an ideal realization of Don Giovanni" (Neue Zürcher Zeitung). With his finely balanced voice, Luca Pisaroni as an intellectually bespectacled Leporello. "The powerful bass of Commendatore Tomasz Konieczny is a true sensation" (Frankfurter Rundschau). The female roles are all realized with elegantly lean voices: Anett Fritsch highly dramatic as Elvira, the Donna Anna of Lenneke Ruitens supple in her vocal line and Valentina Naforni?a "a wonderful Zerlina who radiates strong vocal sensuality" (Opernnetz).

Special feature: Full length real-time BEHIND THE SCENES.

Image Verdi:Messa Da Requiem
The performance of Verdi's famous Messa da Requiem celebrating Toscanini's fiftieth anniversary of death in 2007 took place at the beautiful basilica of St Mark's in Venice, where it was first performed on 22 May 1874 to mark the anniversary of the death of the Italian poet Alessandro Manzoni. The Orchestra Symphonica Toscanini was founded in Rome in 2006 and consists of some two hundred young and highly skilled musicians, all of whom have been selected by Lorin Maazel, the orchestra's Music Director for life. The use of opera singers in this sacred work gives this interpretation a special splendour, harking back to the performance tradition that can be retraced to the first performances led by Verdi himself in 1874. With this gorgeous interpretation, Lorin Maazel celebrates Maestro Toscanini's fiftieth anniversary of death and the country of Italy which gave him his inspiration.

Image The Colón Ring Documentary
Is it really possible to stage Wagner's Ring on a single day? The composer's great-granddaughter, Katharina Wagner, who now runs the Bayreuth Festival, was keen to stage Cord Garben's abridged version of the cycle at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, but in the event things turned out rather differently.

When she and her team arrived at the Colón, they found that the rehearsal conditions were not what they were expecting, and so she decided that the task should be entrusted to a different director. Valentina Carrasco took over at short notice and together with the singers and the set and costume designers she staged the Ring in a seven-hour version never previously seen and all on a single day!

The documentary provides a thrilling and visually memorable account of the long journey taken by this version from its inception to the first night.
