Conductor Steuart Bedford
Directed for the screen by Margaret Williams
Live production directed by Tim Albery

Filmed in June 2013 during three extraordinary performances that took place during the Aldeburgh Festival, Peter Grimes on Aldeburgh beach takes place in the heart of the town that inspired it and is the ?lm interpretation of Britten's Peter Grimes, the most successful opera of post-war Britain.

Based on George Crabbe's 1810 poem 'The Borough', Britten's powerful and masterful evocation of the North Sea in all its moods has become inextricably linked with the Aldeburgh that was home to Crabbe in the late eighteenth century and Britten in the twentieth, and where both poem and opera were written. Conceived and hosted by the Aldeburgh Festival, the performances of Peter Grimes were directed by Tim Albery who placed the audience on the beach watching the story of Peter Grimes unfold as dusk fades over the sea.

The cast and chorus, with Alan Oke in the eponymous role of Peter Grimes, Giselle Allen as Ellen Orford, and David Kempster as Captain Balstrode, sing live with ampli?cation, while the Britten-Pears Orchestra under the baton of Britten expert Steuart Bedford is pre-recorded.

Based on an illustrated tale published as a newspaper serial, this fanciful opera is one of Janácek´s true masterworks - at once charming, frightening, tragic and, in the end, life-affirming. The Cunning Little Vixen has been seldom staged in Italy, and this Florence production stars Seiji Ozawa as conductor and Laurent Pelly as stage director and costume designer. The cast of unbelievable 13 soloists is lead on by the Armenian/Canadian soprano star Isabel Bayrakdarian as a sensual Bystrouška (vixen) and American Quinn Kelsey as the brash yet reflective Gamekeeper.

This production received rave reviews for beautifully bringing to life on stage the opera´s fantasy world of animal protagonists. This is a work that can be enjoyed by not only classical music fans but by anyone, from child to adult.

Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker from a different point of view - very refreshing, very unusual, very hip hop. This is what the French choreographer Bouba Landrille Tchouda makes out of ETA Hoffmann's story 'The Nutcracker and the Mouse King' and Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's romantic and moving composition. Together with his Compagnie Malka he interprets the classical ballet in a surprisingly modern way, adding music by Yvan Talbot and a lot of Hip Hop.Hip Hop is where Bouba Landrille Tchouda originally comes from and what enables him to create new perspectives on classical works we have never seen like that before.

'Proposing a Nutcracker that reinvents a phantasmagorical world infused with the energy of the present day by invoking hip-hop dance, so as to convey this story to our children and all those who cultivate the strength of desire, the search for the unreachable star, hope, love with its terrors, its share of shadows , uncertainties.. via the dance! Image Orpheus
The myth surrounding the Thracian king's son Orpheus has provided artistic inspiration for numerous composers, painters and directors over the centuries. As a rule, the plots tend to focus on Orpheus' grief following the death of his wife Eurydice and his attempts to retrieve her from the underworld. The choreographers Dominique Hervieu and José Montalvo, generally known for their work in purely musical contexts, instead place Orpheus at the centre of the story as an artist who charms gods and mortals alike with wit and song - even moving rocks to tears. Orpheus tells the story of Orpheus and Eurydice as a modern heroic epic: It's fast, exhilarating, and full of surprises. Nine dancers and seven singers and instrumentalists dance to the sound of bush drums in front of a lavishly-designed backdrop befitting a royal son. Classical singing merges with pop music. Hip-hop and break-dance meet orchestral music. Hervieu's and Montalvo's Orpheus is a captivating work that fans of modern dance theatre will simply adore.

Works by Tchaikovsky, Rossini and Verdi

In 2013 Sir John Eliot Gardiner made his second appearance as conductor of the traditional New Year's Concert in the tradition rich Gran Teatro La Fenice di Venezia - together with La Scala in Milan and San Carlo in Naples one of Italy's most famous opera houses. Traditionally, the popular Concerti di Capodanno not only bring in the New Year musically, but also mark the opening of the new opera season which in Venice, contrary to general custom, begins with the calendar year. At the same time they give the opera house's resident ensemble, the Orchestra e Coro del Teatro La Fenice, a perfect opportunity to show off their musical prowess. On the programme of the 2013 concert, in addition, of course, to brilliant gems from the work of this year's bicentenarian Giuseppe Verdi, was Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's Second Symphony in C minor, Opus 17 - a relatively rarely performed piece that is undeservedly overshadowed by the Russian romantic's last three works in that genre. The fiery gallop from Gioachino Rossini's French opera Le siège de Corinthe rounded off the program, in which Italian soprano Desirée Rancatore and Albanian tenor Saimir Pirgu took over the Verdi arias - amongst them Violetta's "Sempre libera" and of course the brindisi "Libiamo ne' lieti calici" from La Traviata.

Placido Domingo's triumphant"return" to his baritone roots (his first debut with the Mexican National Opera, in 1959, was as a baritone), is captured in this stunning DVD of the Teatro alla Scala's 2010 production of Verdi's Simon Boccanegra. Domingo is joined by Anja Harteros, Ferruccio Furlanetto and Fabio Sartori in this Daniel Barenboim conducted performance, directed by Federico Tiezzi. Placido Domingo's intention had been to bring down the curtain on his career in the (baritone) role of Simon Boccanegra. One can only hope - for our sake as well as his - that this truly great tenor of the modern era reneges on his promise and remains a unique vocal and dramatic presence on the opera stage long after the 70th birthday celebrations that were held in his honour on 21 January 2011.

Götterdämmerung, the final instalment of Wagner's Ring of the Nibelung, is a story of human passions. Two essentially benevolent creatures, involved with and possibly doomed by their traffic with the gods, find treachery and evil in the world of the humans, and are ruined by the dark side of humanity. Iréne Theorin, acclaimed worldwide for her portrayal of Wagner's heroines, stars as Brünnhilde opposite Lance Ryan, who continues his radiant portrayal of the tragic hero Siegfried. The strong cast also includes Mikhail Petrenko as the dark antagonist Hagen and Johannes Martin Kränzle, who once again shines as his father Alberich. Opera star Waltraud Meier has a memorable appearance as Brünnhilde's sister Waltraute. With this 2013 recording of Götterdämmerung, the musically and visually compelling Scala Ring Cycle by Daniel Barenboim and Guy Cassiers was completed and proved to be one of the highlights of the Richard Wagner bicentenary.

The energetic drive from Die Walküre is pursued here while Siegfried finally recaptures the mighty ring from Fafner the Dragon and awakens Brünnhilde from her penal sleep on the great rock.

Lance Ryan, having interpreted this role on the greatest stages of the world including the Bayreuth Festival, portrays the naïve hero. His antagonists are Peter Bronder, great and agile as Mime, Terje Stensvold, an experienced Wanderer and Johannes Martin Kränzle, who continues his mean and deceitful depiction of Alberich. Stage Directed by Davide Livermore

"What a pleasure to listen to Demetrio e Polibio", wrote major Italian daily La Stampa after the premiere of Rossini's very first opera at the 2010 Rossini Opera Festival in Pesaro, attributing it "an undeniable fascination". The work was given its first performance in Rome in 1812. It is still unclear whether Rossini was 14 or 18 when he wrote it; what is beyond doubt, however, is the anticipation of great things to come. The libretto is a far-fetched tale of feuding kings, mistaken identities, disguises and cruel fates typical of the late 18th-century opera seria. Young stage director Davide Livermore, heading a production of the Accademia di Belle Arti di Urbino, turns the libretto into a ghost story, setting the action behind the stage of an opera house, when everyone has left and all that remains are the spirits of an opera that yearns for the breath of life - much like the practically forgotten Demetrio e Polibio itself. With the help of little flames that flare up from the singers' palms and other "phantasmagorical" tricks, Livermore creates an enchanting atmosphere that is given a perfect musical rendering by conductor Corrado Rovaris (Music Director of the Opera Company of Philadelphia) and the Orchestra Sinfonica Rossini. Each giving outstanding performances are the four stand-out soloists Maria José Moreno, Victoria Zaytseva, Yijie Shi and Mirco Palazzi, "stars ... of the highest international order" (Süddeutsche Zeitung). Once again, the Rossini Opera Festival fulfills its dual goal of performing unknown Rossini works in new, critical editions, and of fostering young singers on their path towards the world's great stages.

This highly acclaimed production of Strauss' Salome from the Festspielhaus Baden-Baden is staged by German director Nikolaus Lenhoff. Starring Angela Denoke as"a brilliant Salome" (FAZ), who is joined by a great ensemble of soloists, Kim Begley, Doris Soffel and Alan Held. Performing with"great aplomb" (FAZ), the Deutsches Sinfonie Orchester Berlin, conducted by Stefan Soltez, was also enthusiastically celebrated by critics and audience.

"As with his Elektra at last summer's Salzburg Festival, Lehnhoff's strength in this Salome is the psychological accuracy and musicality of his direction ... In Baden-Baden Lehnhoff can rely on a superb ensemble led by Angela Denoke, with her stunning singing and acting An enthralling premiere that thoroughly deserved its rapturous reception. Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung

"The rest of the cast has been carefully selected, and the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin under Stefan Soltesz ranges from passionate lyricism to orgiastic thundering. Soltesz has no need to dominate - he knows where to emphasise, where to come to the fore, where to hold back. These are professionals at work, with nothing problematical or over-interpreted it is quite simply a masterful modern operatic performance, convincingly presented with clarity and careful attention to detail. Exactly 20 years separate Jir?í Kylián's solo Silent Cries and his black-and-white film, Car Men, made in 2006 in collaboration with the Dutch filmmaker, Boris Paval Conen. What unites the two works is the sheer expressiveness of the dance on the one hand, and the distinctive facial gestures and body language of the dancer Sabine Kupferberg on the other. Kupferberg is the one who pulls the strings in Car Men, victim and plotter in equal measure, prepared at all times to stand up to life's problems - as well as to her three co-actors Escamillo, Don José and Micaëla - with humour and enigmatic wit. And so at the end of Kylián's unusual, slapstick-like tragicomedy, she simply abandons her three colleagues, self-assured and incorrigible - just like her role model Carmen. Richard Wagner's "Ring" at the world-famous La Scala in Milan is a first-class musical experience featuring one of the greatest conductors of our time at the podium: Daniel Barenboim. Wagner's tale about the power of the ring, the reign of gold and the battle between dwarves, giants, gods and mortals is picturesque, complex and deeply psychological. It is a demanding work for musicians, singers and the production team. In his stage production, the Belgian Guy Cassiers conveys the aesthetic quality and musical brilliance of this gesamtkunstwerk in dazzling imagery. The challenges of the music and dramatic performance are admirably mastered by renowned singers including René Pape, Waltraud Meier, Lance Ryan, Nina Stemme, Simon O'Neill, Iréne Theorin and many others. In this brilliant studio recording, the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre, the country's boldest and most exciting dance company, brings its distinctive style home to you - dazzling, brash and dynamic, yet graceful and poetic. Divining was Judith Jamison's first major work as a choreographer for Alvin Ailey. The dance evokes a strong feeling for African tribal ritual and is set to hauntingly rhythmic drum music. Revelations expresses Ailey's intense feelings for his roots in the South. Here you'll see Ailey's vivid "blood memories" of the blues, spirituals, gospel music, ragtime and folk songs as well as the hard life of the Southern black during the Depression. Set to Modern Jazz, The Stack-Up takes place in modern-day Harlem. You'll witness the cruel reality of urban street life as a young man is destroyed by drugs. Cry was choreographed by Alvin Ailey in 1971 for Judith Jamison and is one of his most famous pieces. Created as a birthday present for his mother, it is Ailey's tribute to black women. You can't help feeling being moved by the struggle, the anger and most importantly, the celebration.

In fact the first TV production of Owen Wingrave was broadcast in 1971, two years before the staged premiere at Covent Garden. This 2001 production, made for Channel 4 television, intriguingly tells the drama of Owen, who refuses to follow a military career like his ancestors. The story, in which pacifi sm makes up the main theme, was written by Henry James, and the libretto adapted by Myfanwy Piper.

The Canadian baritone Gerald Finley stars as Owen with Peter Savidge, Hilton Marlton and Josephine Barstow at his side. The production was directed by the award winning TV director Margaret Williams. The work is a one of the highlights of the wonderful Kubelík era. Under his guidance the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks also has become one of the world's foremost Haydn orchestras. When the orchestra found the baroque Basilica of Ottobeuren as the perfect venue for sacred and romantic repertoire, their concerts enjoyed huge popularity, leaving a lasting impression on those who experienced them at first hand.
