George Philipp Telemann, more famous in his lifetime than Johann Sebastian Bach, was one of the most prolific composers of the early 18^th century. The Darmstadt Overtures date from around the 1730's, creating a perfect mix of vivacity and relaxation. There is no lack of expressive eloquence or wit in a series of works that today we would describe as 'Suites'. Each overture contains a number of movements, many in dance rhythm, providing members of the orchestra with a virtuoso solo section.
