Tchaikovsky's First Piano Concerto has become so universally popular that we almost forget that he wrote a large scale Second Piano Concerto, and one movement from a Third and incomplete concerto. In addition he also composed a brilliant Fantaisie where he gives equal voice to the soloist and to the orchestra.
Even now there are probably some seventy available versions of the First Piano Concerto, with only ten versions of the Second Piano Concerto, and yet the Second Concerto contains of the brilliance and virtuosity of the earlier work.
It was composed in 1880, forty years after the composers birth, with the Fantaisie coming some four years later.
