Igor Stravinsky (1882-1971)
Oedipus Rex Les NocesStravinsky conducted the first performance of OedipusRex (1925-1927) in the The?ótre Sarah Bernhardt, Paris,on 30th May, 1927, in a double bill with Firebird, inwhich George Balanchine danced the r??le of Kastchei.
Composers--Ravel, Poulenc, and Roger Sessionsamong them--were the first to recognize it asStravinsky's most powerful dramatic work and one ofhis greatest creations. After hearing Ernest Ansermetconduct it in London, February 12, 1936, the youngBenjamin Britten noted in his diary:
'One of the peaks of Stravinsky's output, this workshows his wonderful sense of style and power ofdrawing inspiration from every age of music, andleaving the whole a perfect shape, satisfying everyaesthetic demand ... the established idea oforiginality dies so hard.'"
