Robert Schumann was one of the most gifted composers of the early 19th century. He was a true Romantic, a free spirit, who broke away from musical convention. Apart from his songs, he received little recognition in his lifetime, a fact that must have contributed to his mental breakdown and early death. The first two of his three Piano Trios were written in 1847, his marriage to be his beloved Clara now being achieved. They exhibit youthful verve and ardour, captured in Schumann's vivid sense of tonal colours.
